Walk & Talk Therapy

Walk and Talk Therapy – What is it?

Walk and Talk Therapy is a type of movement and sensory based therapy that encourages mindfulness, relaxation, release of physical tension, deep breathing, and encourages increased insight and clarity.  You and your therapist will discuss whether Walk and Talk Therapy is right for you.

Where will Walk and Talk Therapy Occur?

Our Office at 14722 S. Naperville Road, Plainfield is conveniently located in front of Riverview Park in Plainfield. This park offers trails, picnic area and a tranquil setting. As you meander over the bridge, you will experience a beautiful view of the DuPage River and plenty of nature to please your senses. The trail is less than a mile and takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Benefits of Walk and Talk Therapy

You have heard that fresh air and exercise are good for you! Walk and Talk Therapy facilitates movement of your muscles and bilateral stimulation of your brain. This mind body experience relaxes the nervous system and helps some clients open up more easily. The sensory stimulation of walking out in nature engages the senses and relaxes the nervous system.  The side-by-side walking takes some of the pressure off of a face-to-face interaction. Clients also report gaining a feeling of empowerment by setting the pace of their walking.  Children, teens and clients with ADHD, Autism and other neurodivergent conditions may prefer this type of therapy.

Walking movement also encourages deep breathing helps clients learn ways to reduce overall stress, release physical tension and encourages physical fitness.  Being out in nature increases mindfulness and staying in the moment.  Also, because our brains naturally try to find meaning and understanding of life’s complexities, insight and clarity can be gained by being out in natural surroundings. Being in nature also affords opportunities for those struggling with anxiety to set up various “exposures”.

Discuss any physical or other concerns you have with your therapist to make sure that Walk and Talk Therapy is right for you.

How will my privacy be protected?

Privacy is a concern to discuss with your therapist. Riverview Park tends to be pretty vacant most of the time during weekdays. There may be more people on the trail in the evenings and weekends or early mornings. We will do our part to end discussion when others are around and ask that you do as well. However, there is a chance you may be overheard.  You may also see someone familiar on your walk. Discuss these concerns with your therapist, so you can make an informed decision about whether Walk and Talk therapy is right for you.  If you are interested, please complete the Walk and Talk Therapy Consent Form.
